A Little Boat that Underwent a Big Transformation
The story of Provincetown Marina's historic launch vessel, "Deliverance"
When Chuck and Ann Lagasse took ownership of Provincetown Marina in 2015, they were excited to embark on a journey of transforming the facility into the world-class destination that it is today. Part of that journey included stumbling upon some forgotten vessels that had been buried in the old fish processing shed. One that stood out was the old launch vessel, "Deliverance," a Herreshoff Harbor Pilot that was built in 1974. The Lagasses knew the value of this iconic brand, and decided to undergo a refit project on the boat.
They sent the worn-down vessel to Great Island Boat Yard in Harpswell, Maine for repair, and upon further inspection, it became clear that there was quite a lot of work to be done to restore Deliverance. Technicians from all departments of the boat yard had to come together to complete extensive work that included fiberglass repair, updated steering systems, custom carpentry, and multiple varnish applications.
The refit project also included the installation of a new deck beam structure, a fresh teak trim, new boarding steps and swim platform, and a new seating arrangement that allowed for more open space and easier boarding and unloading of passengers. The electrical, mechanical, and safety systems were updated and new equipment and lights added to the vessel. After all the improvements were made, coats of high-gloss varnish and Awlgrip were put on, along with the Provincetown Marina logo. Bronze fittings were installed as well as handcrafted rope fendering to bring the launch back to being good as new!
Today, Deliverance is no longer used as a part of the launch fleet, but instead is reserved for special events such as boat shows. Visitors to Provincetown Marina may still enjoy complimentary launch service aboard our other vessels, "Patience" and "Chill."
